The Story of Elise
year:
2020
Arriving where the lava once met the Ocean, she is standing there. Bright colors and an umbrella, she meanders along the coast, a tough cliff of black stone battered by the fiery waters. She seems to be waiting for someone – maybe me – as she appears as a haunting but reassuring figure. This is when we spoke. She seemed possessed by the island’s volcano. Her face, covered with burns, made me imagine a close encounter with the geological beast. The colorful contrast of her clothes, the black rocks, her preach, remind me of the architecture of Tamil culture around the island. She mentions the devil, and wears a red cotton vest. The volcano erupted two days ago, right before I met her. The spectacle of the island’s power blatantly showed me its dominance over its fragile inhabitants. The island only exists because of the volcano.
